Google to Buy Web Analytics Company

San Diego-based Urchin makes Web analytics software and provides on demand services that let customers track marketing performance. Urchin tools are available as a hosted service, a software product and through large Web hosting providers.

The acquisition would be Google's first since October 2004, when the search engine purchased digital mapping specialist Keyhole.

"We want to provide Web site owners and marketers with the information they need to optimize their users' experience and generate a higher return-on-investment from their advertising spending," said Jonathan Rosenberg, vice president of product management, Google. "This technology will be a valuable addition to Google's suite of advertising and publishing products."

The acquisition is expected to finalize in April after undergoing the usual round shareholder and government reviews.

ICANN Approves .eu Domain Space

The European Union (EU) can now make a name for itself on the Internet, following this week's approval to include .eu as a country code top-level domain (ccTLD).

Directors at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the new name space at a meeting Monday. Officials at EURid, who will take over registry management of the ccTLD, expect final approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce within the next week.

Over the next few months we will be working very hard on the final preparations with the aim of launching the .eu sunrise period later this year.

Kieran Baker, a spokesman at ICANN, would not comment on the speculation, pointing to the popularity of Germany's .de, the second largest domain extension on the planet, as well as the United Kingdom's .uk, which ranks fourth in popularity worldwide.

Yahoo Boosts Web Mail Storage

Yahoo will increase the inbox capacity of its free Web mail service for the third time in the past 9 months, now raising storage to 1GB. The new storage capacity exceeds that offered by Microsoft's Hotmail and matches that offered by Google's Gmail.

Yahoo, in Sunnyvale, California, decided to increase the inbox capacity because it has become apparent that users are increasingly storing messages with large attachments, such as photos, he says.

With this move, Yahoo is anticipating the moment when Gmail is launched to the general public, so that inbox storage will not be a competitive advantage for Google.

Analysts say the move will almost certainly bring some responses. The most pressure might be on Microsoft, which has tried to dangle such large storage vaults as a premium service for paid users. Some analysts predicted it might even prompt Google to raise its own ceiling to 2 MB. Yahoo offers that level of storage for its premium mail service, which costs US$20 per year and is free of the display ads in the free version.

10 years ago, eBay changed the world

Popular wisdom, stoked by eBay (EBAY) press material, has long said that Pierre Omidyar started eBay 10 years ago so his girlfriend could have a way to trade Pez dispensers.

The first version of what would become eBay went online in September 1995. Since then, the company has been on quite a run. It had $3.3 billion in revenue in 2004, getting to that mark faster than Dell, Microsoft or Cisco Systems. It has 135 million users worldwide — a cyber nation-state about as populated as Germany and France combined.

In the meantime, eBay has become a phenomenon. It has changed how people think about the junk they once might've sold at garage sales. It has fostered the idea that trust between strangers can be established over the Internet. And it has been a source of amusement, whether about the grilled-cheese sandwich with the image of the Holy Mother that sold for $28,000 or the man who auctioned his forehead for advertising space for $37,375.

Whitman shifts into her presentation persona. First, she says, eBay will keep expanding worldwide. Today, in about 15% of transactions, the buyer and seller are in different countries. "I'd be surprised if that's not 50% to 60% 10 years from now," Whitman says.

Bertelsmann to offer P2P download platform

German media giant Bertelsmann, a former partner of file-sharing network Napster, is launching a new Internet platform for downloading and sharing movies or games over the Internet.

Arvato, Bertelsmann's services and technology arm, said it would sell the service, dubbed GNAB, to mobile phone operators, Internet providers and TV stations, which could then offer their clients legal downloads of large files under their own brands.

But easy-to-use services such as computer maker Apple's iTunes have let the music industry discover its sympathy for music downloads and led to a surge in legal online music sales.

Bertelsmann, which with Sony co-owns the world's second-largest music label, Sony BMG, teamed up with Napster in late 2000, when the service was already being sued by the industry for helping copyright infringements.

Ask Jeeves Inc. to Be Bought for $2 Billion

IAC/InterActiveCorp announced plans today to purchase Ask Jeeves in an all-stock transaction valued at $1.85 billion.

IAC intends to grow Ask Jeeves' search share by using its local content properties, which include Citysearch, Ticketmaster, Evite, and Match.com, as well as its Expedia travel sites, said Barry Diller, chairman of IAC.

Paid search ads will continue to be provided through Google's AdWords program through 2007, when Jeeves' existing agreement ends. Plans beyond that are not set, with Diller leaving open the possibility to renew the agreement. But Ask Jeeves CEO Steve Berkowitz strongly hinted Jeeves might have its own ad system in place by then, based on its Teoma search technology.

Diller plans to invest in marketing to get new users and rely on Ask's technology to keep them. In this way, IAC hopes to narrow the gap between Ask.com's brand recognition and its market share.

Other plans include incorporating Ask.com search results into relevant content from IAC's 40 sites in verticals such as retailing, ticketing, personals, media, financial services, real estate, and teleservices. IAC will also establish a long-term distribution relationship with its travel properties, which it plans to spin off under the Expedia brand.

The plans, announced in December, will include 13 travel-related sites -- including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Hotwire, TravelNow.com, and TripAdvisor. The spin-off is expected to take place soon after the Ask Jeeves deal is completed.

Yahoo seeks to expand in Google territory

Yahoo is poised to launch an ad network for small Web publishers styled on a similar offering from Google, sources familiar with the plan told CNET News.com, a move that promises to sharpen competition between the search giants.

Dan Boberg, director of business partnerships for Yahoo subsidiary Overture Services, confirmed in an interview last week that Yahoo is interested in the market, although he declined to discuss details. "We're headed in that direction," he said.

Yahoo also recently launched a publisher alert service to notify publishers of new publishing and advertising tools.

Yahoo already employs algorithms and detection methods to fend off click fraud. The company will likely use some oversight in allowing new publishing partners, according to a source.

Getting more visitors to your blog

Pinging lets dozens of services know you've updated your site and increases traffic to your blog.

There are a number of services designed specifically for tracking and connecting blogs. However it would be expensive for all the services to crawl all the blogs in the world all the time. By sending a small ping to each service you let them know you’ve updated so they can come check you out. They get the freshest data possible, you don’t get a thousand robots spidering your site all the time. Everybody wins.

Google takes 'beta' off desktop search

Google on Monday plans to introduce a full version of its desktop-search software, with a developer's kit and support for Firefox and Netscape Web browsers.

"Google desktop search stores a copy of everything you see," said Nikhil Bhatla, a Google product manager. "That can be extremely useful if, for example, an application crashes. With (the tool), you can get the text of that last document you were working on."

For now, Google has no plans to display ads related to consumers' personal information, Bhatla said. News.com

Uncommon HTML Tags

At site reference, i found several uncommon html tags that will improve your rankings.

- The acronym tag allows for a website to explain what an acronym stands for. For example, the acronym SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. However, when the spider comes to your website, all it will see is SEO which may mean various things. The acronym tag will allow you to add this keyword to your text. The use of this tag should look like this: seo.

- Although using tables to determine the layout of your website is becoming a practice that will soon be extinct, tables will still be necessary. The caption tag allows you to identify what a specific table is about. An example: Table 3.2. Raw Sales Data

Useful tips for your seo.
