Microsoft to Stop Mac IE Support

Microsoft Corporation has announced that it will stop supporting the Mac OS X version of its Internet Explorer (IE) Web browser from December 31.

The company has advised Mac users to shift to "more recent" Web browsers such as Apple's Safari.

Analysts are in the least surprised by Microsoft' move, which has reportedly been scheduled since June 2003. They say that IE on Mac is an outdated browser, which hasn' had a major update for around 3 years. Besides with more modern browsers like Safari, Firefox and Camino available free-of-charge to Mac OS X users, analysts don t see the reason for anyone to still use IE.

Although the Redmond, Wash.-based developer stopped work on the Mac edition of IE more than two years ago, its previously published lifecycle for the browser set Dec. 31, 2005 as the end-of-support date. No security or performance updates will be issued after the end of this month, Microsoft said in a bulletin on its Mactopia site.

Web sites designed to work only with IE might have a problem; however more and more developers are looking to create Web sites that are standards-compliant and browser-independent, in order to avoid losing a large proportion of the market which incidentally does not use IE.

Mac users, said Microsoft in the bulletin, should "migrate to more recent Web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari." Other alternatives include Firefox and Opera, both which are available in versions for Mac OS X.

Google in talks to buy 5 pct of AOL

Web search leader Google Inc. (NasdaqNM:GOOG - News) is in exclusive talks to buy a 5 percent stake in Time Warner Inc.'s (NYSE:TWX - News) AOL Internet unit for $1 billion, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.

A deal would shut out Microsoft Corp., which was seeking its own arrangement.

Under the terms of the proposed deal, which could close within days, Google would continue to provide AOL with its paid search advertising technology for five years, the source said.

The deal would allow AOL to sell display and banner advertising to other Web sites using Google's ad serving technology, the source said.

AOL accounts for from 2 percent to 4 percent of Google's revenue on net basis, analysts have said.

Microsoft had been negotiating to get AOL to use its search technology instead, which would have almost immediately given the software giant a huge presence in its fledgling paid search business.

Google, and to a lesser extent Yahoo Inc., have enjoyed dramatic growth in their search advertising businesses over the past year. The companies generate revenue each time a Web user clicks on text advertisements that run alongside Internet search results.

A deal with AOL would set the stage for Google to expand into display advertising, taking dead aim at Yahoo, which is entrenched in both paid search and display advertising. Together the different types of advertising make up a market of roughly $12 billion annually.

AOL is seen is a critical swing factor on search technology traffic among Internet media rivals Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, just as it once was on online advertising, a category it practically invented in the early 1990s.

AOL made surfing the Internet and chatting online a household phenomenon. But it has been a drag on Time Warner's stock as it has lost millions of dialup Internet subscribers since the merger of America Online and Time Warner in 2001.

Internet encyclopaedias go head to head

Jimmy Wales' Wikipedia comes close to Britannica in terms of the accuracy of its science entries, a Nature investigation finds.

One of the extraordinary stories of the Internet age is that of Wikipedia, a free online encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. This radical and rapidly growing publication, which includes close to 4 million entries, is now a much-used resource. But it is also controversial: if anyone can edit entries, how do users know if Wikipedia is as accurate as established sources such as Encyclopaedia Britannica?

Considering how Wikipedia articles are written, that result might seem surprising. A solar physicist could, for example, work on the entry on the Sun, but would have the same status as a contributor without an academic background. Disputes about content are usually resolved by discussion among users.

Wikipedia is growing fast. The encyclopaedia has added 3.7 million articles in 200 languages since it was founded in 2001. The English version has more than 45,000 registered users, and added about 1,500 new articles every day of October 2005. Wikipedia has become the 37th most visited website, according to Alexa, a web ranking service.

Only eight serious errors, such as misinterpretations of important concepts, were detected in the pairs of articles reviewed, four from each encyclopaedia. But reviewers also found many factual errors, omissions or misleading statements: 162 and 123 in Wikipedia and Britannica, respectively.

As well as comparing the two encyclopaedias, Nature surveyed more than 1,000 Nature authors and found that although more than 70% had heard of Wikipedia and 17% of those consulted it on a weekly basis, less than 10% help to update it. The steady trickle of scientists who have contributed to articles describe the experience as rewarding, if occasionally frustrating.

Wales also plans to introduce a 'stable' version of each entry. Once an article reaches a specific quality threshold it will be tagged as stable. Further edits will be made to a separate 'live' version that would replace the stable version when deemed to be a significant improvement. One method for determining that threshold, where users rate article quality, will be trialled early next year.

Additional research by Declan Butler, Jenny Hogan, Michael Hopkin, Mark Peplow and Tom Simonite.

Yahoo Upgrades Widget Engine

Yahoo launched a new version of its widget engine, a platform for running mini desktop applications built by Yahoo or third-party developers for search, photo and mapping services, and other functions.

A widget is a small application that runs on the desktop without the use of a browser. The software often draws content from a Web service. Yahoo, for example, offers widgets that are tied to its search, photo and mapping services.

Widgets are useful to portals because they can draw users to their services directly from the desktop, without first having to launch a browser.

The technology behind Yahoo Widget Engine stems from the portal's acquisition in July of Pixoria, which offered the Konfabulator widgets service. Since the acquisition, Yahoo has distributed more than 1.5 million copies of the Konfabulator platform, and users have downloaded more than 10 million widgets, according to the company.

Yahoo! Answers: people-powered search

"Yahoo! Answers is a place where people ask each other questions on any topic, and get answers by sharing facts, opinions, and personal experiences."

It's got all the usual Web 2.0 goodness in it: user-generated content, sharing information, a points system that rewards participation, user ratings, RSS feeds, etc. But as Mike Arrington from TechCrunch pointed out, it doesn't have tagging (choosing to use formal categories instead).

Currently Yahoo Answers has 23 top-level categories and answers will be promoted on Yahoo Web Results pages. Advertising may be added in future and people who answer questions may get paid in due course. Yahoo! has also closely integrated this with existing products, with 'Save to My Web' and 'Add to My Yahoo!' buttons.

Yahoo! Answers is a big step up from what Google offers. Google Answers is fee-based and only "qualified" Google researchers answer questions - it is generally a lot more formalized (less democratic?) than Yahoo! Answers

Directory Critc - Submit your directory

Directory Critic is a new directory list, directory rating and directory information website. The aim of Directory Critic is to run a detailed directory list where you can not only get links to directories, but read other webmasters opinions, compare ratings, read reviews etc.

How it works:
The way the directories are listed on Directory Critic is based around a webmaster rating system. When directories are rated by webmasters they accrue points. The better the ratings the more points the directory gets.

The top 20 directories get listed on our homepage. These directories will benefit from the extra exposure by being at the top of our directory lists.

Review dirSpace Directory at Directory Critic.

Each directory has a unique link that the directory owner can place on the submit page or in the “you’ve been listed” email. This link goes directly to the directory’s rating page. I encourage all directory owners to ask their webmasters to rate their directory on Directory Critic. The more ratings you get, the more points you get…etc etc.

Directory Owners: how to add your directory:
Directory owners can register and add their directories to the directory critic database. You only need to register once, and you can submit all your directories under that user account. Owners can log in and change/update their directory details at any time (incase you might want to add special offers etc). Each directory is reviewed before appearing on our lists to filter out any possible spamming.

Webmasters: how to submit to our lists
We’re only new, so it will take time before we build up a comprehensive list. You can access our directory lists by going to Directory Critic. They have a separate free, paid and recip lists and our lists can be sorted by PR, points, name, date submitted etc. I will be promoting this directory heavily so it will not take long before we have a good list of directories to offer.
