Our hearts go out to all the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and to the insurance community that will, without a doubt, provide tremendous support during the rebuilding.
Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, devastated the Gulf Coast of the United States from New Orleans, Louisiana to Mobile, Alabama. Katrina made landfall in the early morning of August 29, 2005. The hurricane is believed to have killed thousands of people, and known to have displaced more than 1 million — a humanitarian crisis on a scale unseen in the U.S. since the American Civil War.
As the hurricane approached landfall near New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin placed the city under a mandatory evacuation order. Many residents remained in the city. The vast majority of those who stayed were reported to have been unable to leave because they did not have vehicles, money for gas and other transportation.
